The Setting

Deep in the region of the galaxy known to the Imperium as Segmentum Ultima, Autarch Keiron leads his small fleet of Eldar spacecraft, far from their home on the Craftworld of Il-Kaithe.  Their mission is to take advantage of an event predicted by one of Il-Kaithe's most prominent Farseers.  Keiron has been told that there will be a small opening in which a powerful artifact of ancient Eldar design may be rescued from the grasp of Chaos.  This artifact, able to manipulate the energies of the Warp and quickly open gateways to the Immatrium, is known to the Eldar as the Ghostcaller and has been held and used in horrific ways by the forces of Chaos.  The artifact is carried with a powerful army of Chaos Space Marines, but the Farseer saw that this army would soon suffer a defeat by an expansionist Tau army and this would leave the artifact abandoned and vulnerable for a small period of time. When the Tau pushed the Chaos forces off of the small planet of Melx, they were forced to leave the Ghostcaller which they had arrogantly brought so far from the protection of their base worlds.  Now the Eldar must launch a quick strike at the heart of the Tau detachment in the area, a team from the Bork'an Sept, before they stumble across the Ghostcaller first and it is lost from the hands of the Eldar again...

The Battle

The Eldar Strike Team         The Tau Detachment

Deployment - Mission type is Annihilation, deployment type is Spearhead.  Stewart deploys first, hiding half his army behind his Hammerhead.  He puts his unit of Fire Warriors with pulse rifles in cover in the trees and boldly places his Commander out front.  I (Brian) put my Dire Avengers (one unit inside the Wave Serpent) in position to quickly move up and get in range with their shuriken catapults and keep my Warp Spiders and Autarch in reserve so they can Deep Strike later.  Stewart then Infiltrates his Stealth Suits behind my Dire Avengers (you can see their guns in the bottom right of the picture) and I Infiltrate my Rangers into a postion with cover and a good open firing range.

Turn 1 - My Eldar and I Steal the Initiative, as is proper, so I move first and send my Wave Serpent forward, dropping of its Dire Avenger cargo into cover close to Stewarts mass of units (hidden from the camera by that building the Wave Serpent is behind).  My Avengers on foot I send back to deal with the sneaking stealth suits.  In the shooting phase I get lucky and Stewart sheds a few tears as my forward unit of Avengers cuts down the majority of his Carbine weilding Fire Warriors from around the Hammerhead and my rear unit of Avengers take down all three of his Stealth Suits.  His armour saving was terrible (I think he saved both his Drones that were with his Stealth Suits but failed almost all the Suit Saves).  My Wave Serpent makes its first attempt at taking down the Hammerhead, but fails, and my Rangers take a wound off the Commander.  Stewart moves his Commander into cover (taking a wound from the dangerous terrain test if I remember correctly) and the Tau fire back at the Eldar, taking out a few of my Avengers with a torrents of fire, and the Hammerhead's railgun takes a shot at my Wave Serpent but does not penetrate the armour.

Turn 2 - My Autarch, Keiron, and Warp Spiders arrive, but have a little trouble on the teleport in.  Cocky from a lot of recent Deep Striking success, I try to get them real close and on the flank of Stewart's Hammerhead but the scatter on to the Hammerhead itself.  The mishap table allows Stewart to place the unit for me so he places it way up in the top right of the board in the woods.  One of the Spiders fails its dangerous terrain test upon landing.  I move up my Dire Avengers in back towards the fight.  In the shooting phase the Dire Avengers run closer to the fight, while the other Avengers pick off a few Fire Warriors in the woods and the Rangers fail at penetrating the armour of the Commander's Crisis Suit.  Stewart does not move much during his turn and, in his shooting phase, takes out a few more Avengers in my forward unit, including my Exarch.  This forces me to give up my plan of charging them into combat with his power sword and bladestorm ability and resign them to staying in cover and shooting.  His Hammerhead fails again at hurting my Wave Serpent, but his Commander's missles succeed in destorying my twin-linked brightlance which was my only real hope in bringing down the Hammerhead.  Now if I wanted to destroy the Tau vehicle I would have to some how get my Autarch, with his fusion gun and haywire grenades, across 3 or 4 feet of board to reach it.

Turn 3 - Since my Rangers are not doing so hot at killing the Tau Commander, I send the nearby unit of Dire Avengers to help out and fly my Wave Serpent over the ruins in order to get closer to those infantry hiding behind the Hammhead.  The Warp Spiders and Keiron begin to hop across the board, using the cover of the hill, towards the Tau, but both Warp Spiders who had not been able to get out of the forest with their run move last turn fail their dangerous terrain tests.  Yes, two out of two dice rolled 1's.  One of them was my Warp Spider Exarch.  Needless to say, I am not expecting great things out of this unit anymore after a Deep Strike mishap and their failure to navigate through some trees.  But this would not be the last time we would see snake eyes this turn.  During my shooting phase, the Rangers fail again to wound the Commander (probably scared to death of his flamer which would likely take them out in one turn), but my Dire Avengers score enough wounds that two of them get past the shield drone, on to the Commander who has a 2+ save thanks to his iridium plating.  Stewart rolls two 1's and the Commander retires from battle.  My few remaining Avengers in the other unit kill a Fire Warrior in the trees and my Wave Serpent harmlessly shurikens the side of the Hammerhead.  During Stewart's shooting phase I believe he finishes off my Dire Avenger squad in the ruins with a slavo from pulse rifle, burst cannon, and ion blaster weaponry.  I believe some seeker missles take a couple of Avengers in my remaining unit.  I may have that mixed up though.  Either way, many Dire Avengers were shot.

Turn 4 - I jump my Spiders and Autarch out in front of the Fire Warriors and move my Dire Avengers into cover in the ruins, and move the Wave Serpent to get the carbine weilding Tau Fire Warriors in view.  I get lucky enough to cut down those two remaining Fire Warriors, and the Warp Spiders unload on the other Fire Warriors with no success.  On Stewart's turn he begins to weedle down my second group of Avengers and sends his Fire Warriors to unlease Rapid Fire hell on my Warp Spiders.  Both Warp Spiders are killed, but the Autarch remains unwounded and easily passes his morale test.

Turn 5 - I direct all my shooting at the Fire Warriors in the trees.  The Dire Avengers do not reach with their 18" range but the Rangers make one kill as does the Autarch, with his fusion gun, who I moved to within two inches of them.  I then make the first assault of the game with my Autarch into the Fire Warriors.  His six attacks take down two Tau, and he avoids any wounds from their retaliation.  The Fire Warriors fail their morale test and are cut down and scattered by the Autarch.  Stewart focuses his fire at my remaining Avengers but can not seem to get rid of them, leaving two remaining.  He does divert a railgun blast at my Autarch, but Keiron is saved by his forceshield.  Stewart roles a die to see if we continue the game, but it says no.

The Tau of Bork'an, caught off guard and with their Commander out of action, retreat out of the area to regroup and reasses the situation.  Keiron quickly has his forces skim the area for any signs of the Ghostcaller.  He knows he will not have much time until either the Tau return or the Chaos Space Marines make an attempt to take back the planet.
